Cold Outreach That Actually Works
Cold outreach has a terrible reputation. People think of spam emails, annoying phone calls, and pushy salespeople. And honestly, most cold outreach deserves that reputation.
But done right, cold outreach is the fastest way to build a client base from nothing.
The difference between outreach that works and outreach that gets deleted is simple. Bad outreach is about you. Good outreach is about them.
Bad outreach: Hi, we are an innovative operations company that provides best in class solutions for businesses looking to optimize their workflows and maximize efficiency.
Good outreach: Hi, I noticed your property management company has been growing. Most companies your size struggle with tenant communications taking up too much of the owner is time. We handle that for companies like yours so you can focus on growing the portfolio.
See the difference? The first one talks about the sender. The second one talks about a specific problem the receiver probably has.
Here are the principles that make cold outreach work.
Be specific about who you are targeting. Generic messages get generic responses, which is none. The more specific you can be about the recipient is situation, the more likely they are to respond.
Lead with the problem, not the solution. People do not care about what you do. They care about the problem you solve. Start with their pain.
Keep it short. Five sentences maximum for an email. Thirty seconds for a voicemail. Nobody reads long cold emails. Nobody listens to long voicemails.
Include a clear call to action. What do you want them to do? Book a call? Reply to the email? Visit a page? Make it obvious and easy.
Follow up. This is the most important part. Most responses come from follow ups, not initial messages. Build a follow up sequence and stick to it.
Measure and iterate. Track your open rates, response rates, and meeting rates. Test different subject lines, different messages, different timing. Small improvements compound quickly.
Cold outreach is a skill. The more you do it, the better you get. Start today.
