Our Success Is Downstream of Yours

Our Success Is Downstream of Yours

By A Foundery•

*If a studio can win while its founders lose, the design is broken.*

Look closely at most startup institutions and you will find a quiet asymmetry. The fund collects fees whether or not the portfolio thrives. The accelerator's brand grows on the volume of its intake, not the survival of its graduates. The incubator's downside is diversified; the founder's downside is their life. Everyone is aligned in the press release. Fewer are aligned in the P&L.

We designed A Foundery so that the asymmetry cannot exist. There is no version of our model where we do well and the founder's company does not. Our outcomes are downstream of exactly one thing: whether the businesses our founders run become genuinely, durably valuable. Not marked up — valuable. Not announced — working.

**We win when the founder wins. Not before, not instead. That alignment is the entire design.**

This changes small decisions in ways that compound. When a founder is struggling, a misaligned institution manages its exposure. We get in the trenches, because their problem is literally our problem. When an idea is not working, a misaligned institution lets it drift — the fees continue either way. We say so early, because wasted years cost both of us. Alignment is not a value we hold. It is a structure we built, and structures outlast intentions.

There is a feeling underneath this that is hard to put in a business document, but it belongs here: the way we measure a good year is by how many of our founders no longer need us. Watching someone walk into the room uncertain and walk out running a company that pays them, employs others, and answers to no one's permission — that is the exit we are chasing. The rest is accounting.

Your success is our success. We wrote that into the architecture, so neither side ever has to take it on faith.
