The Room Matters More Than the Roadmap

The Room Matters More Than the Roadmap

By A Foundery•

*Put relentless people in one place and something happens that no plan can produce.*

In an era when everything can be remote, we made a stubborn, old-fashioned choice: our founders build together, in person, in one room in Princeton. It is the least fashionable decision in our model, and one we would defend to the last.

Here is why. The hardest part of a company's earliest days is not strategy. It is psychology. Doubt arrives daily. Rejection arrives hourly. A founder alone metabolizes all of it alone — and doubt, unwitnessed, compounds like interest. The same doubt in a room full of people fighting the same fight becomes almost comic. You watch the person next to you take a brutal no, shrug, and dial again. Something in you recalibrates.

**A founder near other founders quits less and ships more. The room is not a perk. It is the strategy.**

Proximity does quiet work that no software replicates. The overheard sales call that fixes your pitch. The two-minute question at someone's desk that saves your week. The peer pressure of the best kind — not to look busy, but to be real, because everyone around you knows the difference. Momentum, it turns out, is contagious. So is standard-setting. A room full of people doing the hard thing makes the hard thing feel normal, and normal is the most underrated force in behavior.

We select for the room as carefully as we select the individual. The mix is the magic: different industries, different scars, the same refusal to quit. Years from now, our founders will not remember every metric. They will remember who sat beside them, and what those people made possible.

Plans are necessary. But when we are honest about what changes a founder's trajectory, it is rarely the roadmap. It is the room.
