What Execution First Really Means

By A Foundery•

Execution first is one of those phrases that sounds obvious until you try to live it. Everyone says they value execution. Very few actually organize their entire operation around it.

At A Foundery, execution first is not a motto on the wall. It is an operating principle that dictates every decision we make.

Here is what it means in practice.

No pitch decks before paying customers. We do not spend weeks crafting a beautiful presentation about what the business could be. We spend those weeks finding people who will pay for what the business does.

No perfect products. We launch with the minimum viable version that solves the core problem. Then we iterate based on what paying customers actually tell us, not what we think they might want.

No strategy without sales. Strategy is important. But strategy without revenue is just a wish list. We sell first, then refine the approach based on what the market actually responds to.

No meetings about meetings. If a decision can be made in five minutes, it gets made in five minutes. We do not schedule a follow up call to discuss the agenda for the planning session about the roadmap review. We decide and we move.

This approach is uncomfortable for a lot of people. Especially people who come from corporate environments where process is a substitute for progress. Or from academic backgrounds where planning and research are valued above all else.

We are not against planning. We plan constantly. But the plan is always in service of doing, not the other way around.

The founders who thrive in our program are the ones who are already wired this way. They would rather send fifty cold emails today than spend a week perfecting their messaging. They would rather close one ugly deal than design a beautiful sales funnel.

Execution is not glamorous. But it is the only thing that separates businesses that exist from businesses that almost existed.
