What Nobody Tells You About Starting a Business
Starting a business is sold as an adventure. Follow your passion. Be your own boss. Change the world. The reality is much less poetic.
Here is what nobody tells you.
You will feel stupid most of the time. Not because you are stupid, but because you are constantly doing things you have never done before. Selling to strangers. Building processes from scratch. Making financial decisions with incomplete information. Every day feels like an open book exam you did not study for.
Your friends will not understand. They will ask why you left a perfectly good job. They will wonder why you are working so hard for less money. Some will think you are going through a phase. Let them think what they want.
Rejection is constant. Not occasional. Constant. You will send a hundred emails and get five responses. You will pitch ten prospects and close one. You will build something you are proud of and someone will tell you it is not good enough. This never stops. You just get better at handling it.
The loneliness is real. Even if you have a co founder, there are moments where the weight of every decision sits on your shoulders alone. At three AM, when you are worried about whether you can make payroll, nobody else feels that the way you do.
You will question everything. Your idea, your abilities, your decision to start, whether you should go back to a regular job. This doubt does not mean you are failing. It means you are human.
Here is the part they also do not tell you. Despite all of this, building something from nothing is one of the most fulfilling things you will ever do. The first time a customer pays you, the feeling is electric. Watching a business grow because of your effort and decisions is addictive in the best way.
Just go in with your eyes open. It is harder than anyone says and better than anyone describes.
