What to Do When Nothing Is Working
There will be a week, maybe several weeks in a row, where nothing seems to work. Your outreach falls flat. Your delivery stumbles. Your pipeline dries up. You start to wonder if the whole thing is a mistake.
This happens to every founder. Every single one. The difference between the ones who make it and the ones who do not is what they do next.
First, stop and assess honestly. Not emotionally. Honestly. Look at the data. What are the actual numbers? Not how it feels, but what the metrics say. Sometimes things feel worse than they are because you are tired and frustrated.
Second, identify the bottleneck. In any business, there is usually one thing that is holding everything else back. Maybe it is your outreach message. Maybe it is your close rate. Maybe it is your delivery quality. Find the one thing that, if fixed, would unlock progress.
Third, go back to basics. When nothing is working, the temptation is to try something new. A new strategy. A new tool. A new approach. Resist this. Usually the problem is not that you need something new. It is that you are not executing the basics well enough.
Are you sending enough outreach? Really enough? Not the number you think is enough, but the number the math says you need. Are you following up consistently? Are you delivering to the standard your SOP defines?
Fourth, talk to someone. A mentor, a fellow founder, a coach. When you are stuck, outside perspective is invaluable. They can see blind spots that you cannot. They can ask questions that reframe the problem.
Fifth, take a breath. Not a vacation. A breath. Twenty four hours where you do not think about the business. Go for a walk. Exercise. Sleep. The clarity that comes after rest is real.
Bad stretches are not the end. They are part of the process. The founders who push through them build the strongest businesses.
