Why We Kill Bad Ideas Fast

Why We Kill Bad Ideas Fast

By A Foundery•

Founders love their ideas. Of course they do. The idea is the thing that gets you out of bed in the morning. It is what you tell your friends about at dinner. It is the reason you quit your job and took this crazy leap.

Which is exactly why it is so dangerous.

When you are emotionally attached to an idea, you ignore the signals telling you it is not working. You rationalize bad results. You convince yourself that the market just needs more time to understand. You throw more effort at something that more effort cannot fix.

At A Foundery, we built kill switches into every stage of our program for exactly this reason. If a company has not found a paying customer after a reasonable period of focused effort, we stop. If the unit economics do not work after multiple iterations, we stop. If growth stalls and no amount of adjustment changes the trajectory, we stop.

This is not failure. It is intelligence.

The biggest waste in the startup world is not money. It is time. A founder who spends two years on an idea that was never going to work has lost something they can never get back. Money you can raise again. Time is gone.

We have had founders in our program who had to abandon their initial idea and start over. Almost every one of them will tell you it was the best thing that happened to them. Freed from an idea that was not working, they brought fresh energy to a new opportunity and built something much better.

The ability to kill an idea quickly is a competitive advantage. While other founders are clinging to sinking ships, ours are already building the next thing.

Do not fall in love with your idea. Fall in love with building. The idea is just the vehicle. If this one does not work, take a different one.
