Why We Look for Operators Not Visionaries

Why We Look for Operators Not Visionaries

By A Foundery•

Silicon Valley loves visionaries. The founder who sees the future before anyone else. The brilliant mind who dreams up something nobody has imagined. The charismatic leader who inspires millions with their vision.

We respect all of that. But we do not invest in it.

We invest in operators. People who can take an idea and make it real. People who wake up every morning and do the work, even when it is boring. Especially when it is boring.

The difference between a visionary and an operator is simple. A visionary says here is where we should go. An operator says here is how we get there. Both are valuable. But in the early days of a business, the operator wins every time.

Why? Because ideas are everywhere. Seriously. Walk into any coffee shop and you will hear three people talking about their startup ideas. The world is not short on ideas. It is short on people who can execute them.

When we evaluate founders for our program, we care very little about the brilliance of their idea. We care a lot about their track record of getting things done. Have they shipped something? Have they sold something? Have they built something that other people use?

The best operators we have worked with share a common trait. They are not waiting for permission. They do not need the perfect plan before they start. They do not need all the information before they make a decision. They act, learn, and adjust.

This does not mean operators do not have vision. The best ones absolutely do. But their vision is grounded in reality. It is informed by the work they have done, not just the ideas they have had.

If you are a visionary looking for someone to execute your idea, we are probably not the right fit. If you are an operator looking for the infrastructure to build something real, let us talk.
