The Anvil · Commercial Co-Founder

Lead one of our companies as its Commercial Co-Founder

A Foundery designs each business before we recruit the person to lead it. As Commercial Co-Founder you run the company: you win its customers, build its partnerships and own its revenue. Our team builds the technology and runs the back office.

This is a full-time, salaried operating role with a path to equity. It is not a board seat or an advisory appointment.

The roles

The companies you could lead

Each company below is at the concept stage. A Foundery has defined its market, customer and offer, and it is recruiting its first Commercial Co-Founder. The company itself is set up once its co-founder is matched to it.

The role

What you own, and what A Foundery provides

You own

  • Finding customers and closing sales, personally.
  • Building partnerships and the go-to-market plan.
  • Commercial decisions, and accountability for revenue.

A Foundery provides

  • Technology development by our design and engineering team.
  • Delivery and operational support through our delivery pods.
  • A shared back office covering finance, HR and legal.
  • Strategic guidance and mentorship.
  • Funding under an agreed plan, released in stages against milestones.

This support exists so you can spend your time with customers. It does not take over responsibility for how the business performs. That stays with the Commercial Co-Founder.

Pay and ownership

How salary, equity and funding work

Your salary

$80,000 to $120,000 a year.

The exact figure is agreed with you at the offer stage.

It is paid from your first day of work. You are employed and paid by the company you lead.

Until the company earns revenue, A Foundery funds your salary through the company, separately from the investment stages below. As the company earns revenue, your salary moves to being funded by that revenue, and can rise as the company reaches revenue milestones.

Your equity

You earn equity in the company as it meets agreed milestones. The exact terms, including any vesting, are in the founder agreement, which comes with your written offer so you can review it before accepting.

Equity is only worth what the company becomes worth. There is no guaranteed ownership outcome.

The company's funding

Funding is capital A Foundery invests in the company. It is not paid to you, and it is separate from your salary. It is agreed up front and released in stages as milestones are met:

  1. Concept$15,000 to $20,000

At launch: setup, registration and essential tools such as the website.

  2. Seed$20,000 to $50,000

After the first paying customer, typically within 90 days of launch.

  3. Scale$50,000 to $100,000

Once the company reaches $10,000 in monthly recurring revenue.

  4. Growth$100,000 to $500,000

From $30,000 in monthly recurring revenue, with positive unit economics.

A Foundery invests as equity, not as a loan. Amounts depend on each company's progress and needs, and the investment is not unlimited.

Costs to you: there is no fee to apply or to join, and you are never asked to put in your own money.

Getting started

How you start, and how selection works

Starting

You start as the company's Commercial Co-Founder, full-time. Your first 90 days after launch have one goal: the first paying customer.

Where you work

Remotely or at the Princeton, New Jersey studio. A Foundery decides this case by case. You must be legally living in the US with valid work authorization.

Selection

  1. Apply online

  2. Complete an assessment

  3. Shortlist

  4. Evaluation sprint

A two-week remote trial. It is unpaid, and designed to fit around your current work.

  5. One-day meet and greet

A single day in Princeton, New Jersey, to meet the team in person. Attendance is required and, as with most interviews, travel is at your own expense.

  6. Offer and onboarding

Your written offer includes the founder agreement with the salary and equity terms, which you review before accepting.

If a company does not work

Each stage has clear milestones. A company that misses them receives no further funding and closes at that stage. Your employment and salary end with the company. Where there is a suitable opening, you may move to another A Foundery company.

Fit

Who this suits

This role tends to suit people who:

  • have sold, ideally to other businesses, and are willing to prospect personally;
  • have led a team, a territory or a P&L, or want to;
  • are comfortable making decisions without complete information;
  • can commit to it full-time.

It is a different path from a traditional role. If stability, a defined career ladder or a predictable salary matter most to you right now, those are good reasons to choose a traditional job, and this may not be the right time.

If it fits what you want next, we would like to hear from you.
